The Blepharoplasty (Eyelids)
The first signs of ageing appear with drooping upper lids and puffy bags and wrinkle below your eyes, features that make you look older and more tired than you feel. The surgery aims at reviving the natural vibrant glare.
The surgery is done as early as 40-45 years old but sometimes sooner if hereditary factors are at cause.
The surgery is performed at the private clinic and, in most cases, under local anaesthesia. A light sedative can be given. If the patient wishes it, a general anaesthesia can be planned.
Upper eyelids :
The upper blepharoplasty is suggested when an excess of skin creates a fold, which sometimes can fall over to the eyelashes and hampers make-up applying.
Technique :
Before surgery, pinpointing the correct spot is in order to obtaining a perfect, symmetrical and natural result. The excess of sin and the inner fatty pouches are removed. The scar is almost invisible, since masked in the natural contour line of the eyelids.
LOWER EYELIDS :
The lower blepharoplasty is suggested when a puffiness of the fatty pouches is present, creating a permanently tired look. During the consultation the surgeon will evaluate the tone of the lower eyelid and the amount of the excess of skin, in order to choose the proper technique.
Technique :
Two techniques are available according to the importance of the excess of the skin and the thinness of the eyelid.
- For excessive eyelid skin mostly: An incision is made along the eyelash margin. Through the incision, fat can be removed. The skin is then carefully tightened in order to avoid a pulling effect and modify the glare (rounded eyed).
- For excessive fat mostly: Fatty bags are removed by making an incision through the conjunctive, meaning inside the eyelid where no scar is visible.
The eyelid surgery can be performed alone or along with other rejuvenation procedures: Frontal facelift or cervico facelify.
The risks are minimal and include, as for any surgery, infection, haemorrhage or a retraction of the eyelid.
Post-surgical pain is close to none and for most of the patients Tylenol is sufficient. To reduce swelling, a cold compress is in order for the first 48 hours.
The stitches and bruises will disappear in a week and then make-up can be applied. The period of convalescence is one week.
